Tips and Tricks to pose your Models

If you aspire to be a professional photographer, then you must be aware of the fact that you might have to work in the glamour industry as a fashion photographer or you could choose to be a wedding photographer or a boudoir photographer. Whichever situation you happen to end up at, you must have a deep understanding of poses and how to direct your subjects or models to pose for you to bring out the best in the photograph. Here are some tips that will help beginners find their feet with posing in photography.

  1. Communicate Effectively

First of all, break the ice with your model by having a light conversation so they feel at ease which will definitely reflect in the photographs. It helps to tell a funny story to lighten the mood and make the subject feel relaxed and happy. This is even more important if you are working with people who are not professional models or happen to be new in the industry.

Also, try to give clear instructions without fumbling or sounding unsure so the subject knows that they are working with someone who is confident with their job.

  1. Find Inspiration

Go through magazines or look for inspiration online and take a cue from them. Find what attracts you in a photograph and try to imbibe it in your own photography. However, you must maintain individuality as there is no room for copying or replicating poses.

  1. Figure out what you want to bring in focus

It is extremely important to understand what you want and convey with the photograph. For instance, if you are photographing a ballet dancer then you would obviously want to bring that out in your photography by asking her to try ballet poses. So, make sure the pose of your models compliments their personality or reflect their style in the snap. If you are photographing for a fashion brand you would want to make the clothes center of attraction. So, figure out ways to highlight the right thing in the photos.

  1. Incorporate your knowledge of aesthetic theory

Most people who are not trained professionally from a photography institute are mistaken that the aesthetic theories are only meant for photographing the nature or building and sculptures. You will be surprised to know that the advanced photography classes in Delhi train their pupils to incorporate it in every type of photograph to create incredible visuals. The most often used elements from aesthetic theories are the effective use of negative space to bring more attention to the model’s silhouette, leading lines to draw the viewer’s attention, forming triangles with the model’s arms or legs for a visually appealing outcome.

  1. Start simple

Start with simple poses to create the atmosphere first. Hand on the hips is a good one to start with. Then keep on modifying it and trying new variations of the pose. This will not only give you a lot of new, unique poses but also give a spontaneous and free feel to the snap.

This was just touching the very tip of the iceberg. One must take up a professional degree in photography to have a good knowledge of the craft and excel in the highly competitive field.
